About Us - Becoming A Member

At present - the SABC are not admitting new members. However - if you'd like to be kept informed so you can apply at the appropriate time, please contact our Membership Registrar.

SABC members enjoy flying training, fly-ins, fly-aways, competitions, involvement with aircraft building, involvement with maintaining airport infrastructure and a wide range of social activities.

We recommend prospective new members begin visiting our airfield regularly, and get to know some of the members. Weekends are the busiest times, with people flying, building, and having a coffee and chat too. Flying Sundays are also held every month - come and enjoy some lunch while meeting people.

We also recommend you attend our monthly meetings as a visitor, - you'll be welcomed.

You, and the Club, will be in a better position after a few months, to decide if this is the Club for you. You will need a proposer and two seconders on your application form, both of whom must be Club Members of more than 1 years standing, and this will give our members the confidence to sign your application form.

The main focus of the Club is, as you can tell from the name, all about homebuilt aircraft.

There are no commercial operations permitted from Serpentine Airfield. It is for Sport and Recreational aircraft only.

Associate Membership of SABC is open to almost anybody, subject to review and approval by the Club Committee. Associate members can undertake flying training in either the club aircraft (a Piper Warrior) or in another member's aircraft. Only specifically approved instructors are authorised to conduct training.

Associate Membership does not convey any other significant privileges so after 12 months as an Associate Member, you might want to apply for Full Membership. You need to complete the membership form again and submit it with the appropriate upgrade fee. Note that you need to be a qualified pilot or have an aircraft or aircraft project to be eligible.

If you are interested in building an aircraft - getting to know some Club members is an excellent way of obtaining the chance to see their current projects, and talk about them in detail. This would definitely help you make up your mind if this is for you or not. Building an aircraft is usually a long term committment, both in time and money.

Full members may apply to base an aircraft or project at Serpentine. Once you have an approved aircraft you may then apply for a hangar site. Hangars, however, are a rapidly dwindling resource. There is a waiting list, so you shouldn't have any expectation of building or buying a hangar in the short term, if at all.

If you wish to join, please complete the application form, have it signed by a proposer and two seconders, all full members, and send it together with the appropriate fee to the Membership Registrar.
